Quick Introduction to VoIP Phone Systems

Before anything else, we would like to welcome you to GSPBX (Grandstream PBX). Also known as "The Unofficial Grandstream UCM Configuration Site". This guide website was setup with one goal in mind; and that is to allow interested peeps to learn more about VoIP - specifically those begin provided by the company named Grandstream.

Also we'd like to make things clear that GSPBX is not in any way affiliated with the Grandstream Networks company.

What Is VoIP

Without using the ishtyuufeed technical blabber, VoIP (which stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol) allows us to send voice over the internet. In the simplest of terms, VoIP allow (those who know how to configure/use it) to make calls using the internet. Grandstream GXP phones, Facebook Messenger and Viber are some examples of VoIP platforms at the time of this writing.

The main keywords here are:
  1. Use the internet.
  2. Make calls.

Old Telephone Sets Versus VoIP Devices

Back in the days the telephones that we use are plugged in to a phone jack or commonly known in the nerd community as RJ-11. The RJ stands for "Registered Jack" in case you want to know. The phones that we used in the past are really actual analog telephones.

In VoIP, the phones that we use are actually computers that are pretending to look like a telephone. VoIP phones are usually plugged in to ethernet port or commonly known as RJ-45 port.

Why Use VoIP!?

The answers to this question can be subjective but in my opinion, using VoIP can save you a fortune in the long run. Second is that you can easily configure your VoIP phone system to behave the way you would want it to. For example, when someone calls your business and you want some kind of recording that tells them to press 1 if they want to be transferred to your Sales Team and so on. Such configuration would be a no-brainer in VoIP phone systems. As long as you are not scared with the word "configurations", then you should be fine with anything that is VoIP related.

Typical VoIP Setup

The main straightforward concept of VoIP setup goes like this:
  1. Modem / gateway where you get your internet access.
  2. IP PBX device (such as Grandstream UCM) is connected to the modem / gateway where you get your internet access.
  3. VoIP phone is connected to IP PBX device.
A lot of things can be done to make this setup complex such as adding a switch in between the IP PBX device and the VoIP phones and so on. Your final setup will all depend on what you really need.
